Description

My newest addition to my "farm" as it were are these tiny Tawny Emperor larvae. As you can see they are very much gergarious and host on the ever aboundant Hackberry and/or Sugarberry tree. The species itself could barely be considered medium in size and many may consider them less than colorful but at the very least the caterpillars are very interesting and soon you all will see why I hope!

My goodness! LOL For a single guy you sure have a lot of kids! =D I'm liking your caterpillar shots. It's a good day at Lindenwood when I can find a different kind of caterpillar. I have a massive quantity of caterpillar shots that I hope in the near future to post here. I don't know if I mentioned this to you or not, but there is a great book to ID caterpillars. It's called Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner. It is chock full of great photos! I ordered mine from Amazon.com. I was not disappointed and use it frequently. It even shows some caterpillars in different instars. It even has a section on how to rear caterpillars. I think it's a must have book for anyone interested in caterpillars!
