I lost most of my Luna Moth Photos when my hard drive crashed some months ago as many of you know but I have some left and since a certain someone is a big fan of this lovely species I thought I'd share this one. Now the large antennae is always a sure sign of a male silkmoth for in place of sight they use these to find a female at night.
Scientific Name: Actias luna Family: Saturniidae Subfamily: Saturniinae Tribe: Saturniini
cool ! did you actually capture this one in the Rainforest ? they must be very illusive if so. . . i have not seen one in the short amount of time that i have been visiting. . . .
It did eventually make its way out into the4 exhibit but I took this shot in the lab since it was so kindly sitting the the stick we use to have in there for it. We don't often fly Lunas I'm afraid but we do many times get African Moon Moths which are pretty similar.
A very nice Luna Moth portrait! Nice antennae details! I love Luna Moths too, and we don't see them very often. And when we do find one, it usually has a messed up wing, so no great Luna Moth pictures. You'll have to read about our last Luna Moth adventure. LOL [link] Sorry to hear about your hard drive crash, $ewm also learned the hard way about that, lost a few years worth of photos. It was the end of the world when it happened. Back up, back up, back up. I always burn mine onto a CD and then have another copy on my external hard drive for easy access. I think one of my future jobs is going to be burning all my really important pictures onto a DVD.
